The Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) is opposed to banana imports from the Philippines because of the risks of exotic pests and diseases travelling into Australia on any imported fruit. As a concerned citizen, I support ABGC’s campaign to oppose imports because of the risk they pose to our Australian banana industry and our environment.

There is no reason why we should risk our shores with importing a foreign fruit when we grow enough to support both our local market and overseas interests.Australia must always put its people first and consider the outcome of impoting a product that will be in direct competition with our own local produce. Why is it that all the subsidising is from other governments and never ours loking after its own.

Our banana industry is strong, producing sufficient quality fruit for Australia's needs and presently exotic disease free. It is not just the risk of disease that I am opposed to but also the loss of jobs locally in areas that rely on this industry. A few points.
1. There is a totally inadequate process to prevent thi importation of disease.
2. Its already proven that the authorities do not have the funds or expertise, nor can they act quickly or efficiently enough to address an outbreak if it occurs.
3. Its all very well to have a "level plaing field" for import export purposes, but that should include wage costs, insurance, superannuation, fully paid holidays, workers comp costs and the same working hours and conditions as required by legislation in Australia. If these are introduced into the import equation, then costs would prohibit importation anyway.
4. The government is bleating about unemployment and industry exporting Australian jobs to cheaper locations. To allow imports would destroy banana production in Australia irrespective of disease, and lose who knows how many jobs, businesses and ruin the economy of many country regions.

Agriculture is a major part of the Australian economy with the Banana industry being one of the biggest in North Queensland. Do we care? Do we have a choice? We (you) do ya know. It's at the market. If the Aussie banana is dearer, its because the grower can only survive by making a profit. If you buy an overseas product, the exporting country is making the profit. The overseas grower has made his profit already by selling to the 'exporter'. Wake up you lot....buy the fresher local banana, you'll feel better when you enjoy it. It really is that simple. Pleasure and taste have a price - pay it! Trev

Lets' see if I understand...at the moment we have a trade surplus with the Philipines. In other words we export more to them (copper beef etc) than they export to us (some tinned pineapples and misc services etc). Surely any decision to allow imports (in the name of free trade) must take reasonable account of likely social consequences of doing so. And lets be honest, new diseases could be bad, but they would be manageable, we are world's best farmers, right? Lets weigh up the benefits/costs to both sides...firstly, if we dont import bananas, a few mega-corparate farms based in the Philipines would miss out on access to a small additonal market, a small market they have managed to live without before. However, if we do allow imported bananas, FNQ would be suffer an economic disaster that would hit most towns and business between Cairns and Cardwell like a f@&#ing tsunami.

We do not need to import bananas. The banana industry in the Innisfail / Tully region directly employs over 6,000 people. The flow on effects to our region from the loss of this industry and its jobs, and the risk of pests and diseases, would be devastating.
xxxxxxxx, Boambee East, NSW
We grow sweet and delicious bannanas that are sold locally, the money stays local and so do the jobs created from bannana growing, its a ridiculous idea to import bannanas and risk the importation of diseases, creating an added burden to our local growers resulting in farmers walking away from their land, job losses yet another blow to our rural industries. Don't let it happen
Donna Cohen, Gorokan, 2263

I cannot believe this - Another industry is to be crippled Remember the apple trees torn out in Tasmania from imported apples- under another Labour Government - They cannot stop the pests and diseases unless they radically poison and fumigate and then what quality of fruit are the Australian public going to be eating - is there some policy out there that the Australian Governments are going to break all of our industries so we become an importer of foods from places like Phillipines, Indonesia and countries like them. If we think logically it seems like it. In any crisis and people are complaining but it is funny if people are asked - did you vote them in? just how negative an answer do you get. I haven't known one person who voted the current and the previous one either. People are getting smart and are starting to stand up for their rights - where are our Referendums gone - You will have Flouride in your water like or not - The program I saw many years ago by a dentist was that Fluride was Aliminium smelting waste We are going to be pushed and shoved, poorer Education and the such like will turn us into a communist country - they are no longer giving us an alternative - this is only the start of the avalanche. What product next?

Bananas are a catalyst for economic production in Australia. At such a pivotal point of economic decline what is this government thinking?? The closure of the banana industry would have far reaching impacts adding to the current recession. The Cassowary Coast Region would largely become recipients of government benefits (centrelink)as the loss of bananas being the greatest industry would devastate this region and mininise the backpacker and tourism benefits locally and nationally. Government needs to look at the whole picture of bananas and economic recession!

It is globalization and free trade that is driving this. No time for sentimentality about local farmers, etc when it is distinctly cheaper to import it from overseas. And Australia is a major proponent of globalization to sell its grain, beef, etc. overseas on the “free market.” So you can’t have your cake and eat it also!
The tasteless cheap garlic ( those little white bags) from China (grown under who knows what environmental conditions) is another product that has almost totally supplanted the local product, and sells for 4+ times less than what can be grown in Australia.
Again, globalization and free trade. But this will all come to a grinding halt as oil production goes into terminal decline.
Judy Greensill, Bundaberg, QLD

Australian farmers produce quality produce ,whether it be bananas, apples.beef, lamb etc so we DO NOT need imported products. Imports jepordise our own industries by bringing in unwanted diseases and pests etc. We work hard ourselves to avoid and eliminate potential risks to our australian consumers by supplying a clean and green product for their consumption. Our growing practices are carefully monitored and reported on so Australian consumers can rest assured that when they eat an aussie banana it will be grown and marketed to the stringent guidelines we must follow. If bananas are imported into our country, I feel that not only is there a large threat of new pests and diseases for the industry, but also the large loss of jobs and income for not only the farmers and their workers but all of the follow on effect to all the other businesses in the towns such as supermarkets, car sales, tractor sales etc etc. Also transport will be affected as there will be no trucks travelling south to take the bananas to the markets in Brisbane, Sydney Melbourne etc and therefore no trucks to bring our produce back to all our far north queensland residents, therefore the price of all other food will rise because of transport. It will be disastrous, for every person in Far North Queensland whether they are directly involved in the banana industry. We as Queenslanders h ave already taken a direct hit with rise of rego, fuel and electricity prices. HOW MUCH MORE CAN WE TAKE!!! YES! I am a banana farmer and I VOTE!

Importing Banans will not make them cheaper in the shops, it will only cause hardship for australian farmers by direct competition and throught the Biosecurity risk.
tim johnson, clothiers creek rd condong, nsw
i find it hard to understand how our goverment can justfy bananas being imported into our country from countrys that pay there citzens extermly low wages if any when they say thay say they stand for equal rights for all shorly thay should be saying to the countrys and the companys who stand to make large somes of money from this and pay very little if any extra to the citzens of those countrys
when you start treating the citzens of those countrys with the same rights and wages as we treat our citzens we will talk with you about your products being brought into our country and only then will we consider your imports
the problem is that our owen citzens are going to suffer at the hands or these large multinatinal companys for starters if this happens to the austrilian banana industry it will be desimated thousands of austrilian citzens will lose ther jobs people that have relied on this industry for many years and now nothing else and there isant many other oppitunitys these days as most of our industrys have moved overseas to take advantage of the same things as these companys have that want to import bananas into our country very low wages and very low costs witch our industrys cannot compeate with
for exsample resently i had the honer of meeting the managing director of a very large import export company on another matter who could possibly be one of the companys that want to import bananas into our country and we got into a short conversation about bananas being brought into austrilia i said to him that our industry would most proberbly become extinct if bananas where to be brought into our country he did not understand how this would be posible i said to him our costs are very high for example our cartons cost us around .50 and our fraight can cost up to maybe more depands where your growing area is he laughted and said to me that we can get them from the phillpines to you for that mutch maybe less
i maybe asking a little to mutch now but i dont understand why our unions and our industrys dont work together and push these points as if they dont they dont there wont be any industrys left in our country and no need for unions any more
wouldent it be grate if our industrys and unions worked together and helped not only us but the people in the countrys that humane rights do not seem to matter to our goverment or large companys around the world
to work together to protect all of us i dought that.
to make a better world all over
